The Fig Tree Withered

“How did the fig tree wither so quickly” (Matthew 21:20)?

Jesus was hungry one morning, as He was on His way back to the city. He saw a fig tree and went up to it but saw it had borne no fruit. He said to it, “May you never bear fruit again!” The Bible says the fig tree immediately withered. Jesus’ disciples were utterly amazed as they watched the tree wither away right before their eyes. They asked Jesus how this could be. Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea’ and it will be done. If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask in prayer (v. 21).”

What I understand from this Scripture is that Jesus was unhappy with that which the Father, God, created to bear fruit but doesn’t! And, that because we allow ourselves to lack proper faith we are willing to accept much less than what God intends for us. Some will say, “It’s impossible to speak to a huge mountain and command it to do anything much less be moved to somewhere else!” I submit, “Okay, nit-pick and deny what God instructs, even if He means it to be well for you.” Jesus isn’t training us to be illusionists, or magicians so we can amaze our friends. He is instructing us to have that vitally important, life-saving quality of supernatural faith in Him! When we have extraordinary faith we will see extraordinary results!

God created each of us to bear our own kind of fruit. If we aren’t sure what our fruit is, we can pray to His Holy Spirit and ask Him what God intended for us to produce and He will tell us. Have faith! We must have faith to know God’s will and to receive the miracles of God.

Wither not! Stand tall in your faith in God, and you will see much fruit.
