Envy’s Trap

Discontentment can lead to other sins

As we look at other folks wishing we had what they have or that our circumstances or possessions were as good as theirs that’s envy. Envy, God clearly says, is a sin. Sin usually leads to anger, bitterness, and resentment. These three emotions wreck lives, marriages and families. Envy has also caused violence and murder. Remember in the Bible the story of the brothers Cain and Abel? It’s found in [Genesis 4:3-8.] When we are envious we are saying we aren’t happy with the provisions God has provided for us. It’s like saying, “God, I know better what I need, want and must have.”

Satan rebelled against God out of envy and jealousy. [Isaiah 14:13-14] says, “For you have said in your heart: I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation on the farthest sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.”

Our prayer: “Lord, help us understand what envy is and guard us against this sin.”
